Both Islamic and Catholic clergy caution against the overuse of exorcism, since most cases are actually due to psychological and physical causes.  Real cases of possession are rare.  (The faithful are warned to watch out for exorcists who encourage a diagnosis of possession too quickly, as they may only be seeking monetary gain.)
"When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.
